Latvia selects Czech Morana howitzers over Swedish Archer system

The Latvian government has announced the selection of the Czech Morana 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzer, reversing a previous direction toward Sweden’s Archer system. The decision follows a June 2025 letter of intent with Sweden for 18 Archer units, but officials determined the Czech offer from Excalibur Army was more advantageous.

The Latvian Ministry of Defence cited several reasons for the shift, including more favorable pricing, faster delivery timelines, and operational equivalence. Crucially, the Morana proposal includes provisions for Latvian industrial participation, which would involve the country’s domestic defense industry in the program.

The Morana system features a 41.5 kilometer range, carries 45 rounds, and utilizes an automated loading system capable of firing six rounds within the first minute of operation. This procurement is part of Latvia’s record 2026 defense budget, which is set at 4.91% of GDP, totaling approximately €2.16 billion.
