NATO fighter jets shot down a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Latvian airspace early on August 14, 2026. The interception was carried out by Italian Eurofighter jets operating under the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission. Two Turkish F-16 jets were also scrambled in response to the incident.

Latvian authorities stated the drone entered their airspace as a result of Russian electromagnetic warfare. Air threat sirens were issued for several municipalities, including Augšdaugava, Preiļi, Rēzekne, Balvu, and Alūksne, prompting residents to seek shelter. The drone was reportedly shot down at a high altitude in a forested area near Lake Bože in Balvu municipality. No injuries or property damage have been reported, though authorities noted that debris may be scattered over a wide area.

In response to the security situation, Finland's Defence Forces implemented temporary restrictions on aviation and maritime traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland as a precautionary measure. An investigation into the origin and nature of the drone is currently ongoing.
