Latvia storm response: Power line safety warnings and V2L utility

Following a severe storm in Latvia, utility provider Sadales tīkls is working to repair damaged power lines caused by fallen trees and broken supports. The company has issued an urgent safety warning, advising citizens to stay away from downed, broken, or low-hanging wires, as damaged lines can unexpectedly become live. Residents are encouraged to report defects via the company's website and to call 112 in dangerous situations.

Amid the power outages, the storm has highlighted the utility of Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology. This feature, found in modern electric vehicles from manufacturers such as Hyundai, Kia, BYD, MG, and Toyota, allows owners to use their car's battery to power external devices like refrigerators, kettles, and computers via a standard household socket. While bidirectional charging was previously limited by expensive external hardware, modern AC V2L solutions integrated into the vehicle make it more accessible for emergency use during outages.
