Latvia tax cuts unlikely due to economic realities
Pēteris Strautiņš, chief economist at Luminor Bank, states that significant tax reductions in Latvia are currently unrealistic. He suggests that any tax cuts would likely be merely symbolic and have minimal impact on the budget.
Strautiņš highlights demographic challenges, noting that the shrinking number of taxpayers—driven by the birth rate decline of the 1990s—will create future fiscal pressure. He advises the next Saeima against micro-managing the economy through industry-specific tax regimes and warns politicians to be cautious of overly optimistic promises regarding GDP growth and wage increases, as these factors are largely outside political control.
Regarding national debt, Strautiņš notes that while political rhetoric often emphasizes the issue, Latvia's debt remains significantly lower than the European Union average. However, he stresses the need for a downward trajectory in the budget deficit to prepare for a future with a smaller workforce.
