Latvia to Deploy New Border Measures as President Rinkēvičs Cites Belarus Hybrid Threat

President Edgars Rinkēvičs announced that a new mechanism to strengthen the Latvia‑Belarus border will be implemented soon, although specific details were not disclosed. The National Security Council approved the steps on Wednesday, and the Interior and Defence ministries will carry them out.

Rinkēvičs said the situation constitutes both a hybrid operation by Belarus and organized crime, stressing the need for rapid‑response teams in addition to fences and technical observation systems that are still under construction. He welcomed tougher penalties for illegal migration, called for intensified diplomatic cooperation with EU partners, and warned that migration pressure could later shift to Lithuania or Poland.
