Latvia wildlife rescue efforts involve municipalities and NGOs

In Latvia, the responsibility for caring for injured wildlife is delegated to local municipalities, which manage the task by contracting animal shelters or veterinarians. Various specialized non-governmental organizations also provide critical support for specific species. For instance, the association ‘Drauga spārns’ focuses on rescuing wild birds, while the ‘Ežu hospitālis’ center cares for hedgehogs and other small rodents. The Riga National Zoological Garden and various animal shelters also provide temporary housing for animals when resources allow.

For animals found in urban areas, municipal police are typically contacted, whereas those found outside inhabited areas fall under the jurisdiction of the State Forest Service, as wildlife is considered state property. Before rescue efforts begin, official approval from these services is required. Each case is evaluated: animals with no hope of survival may be humanely euthanized, while those with potential to recover are treated and released back into nature. Organizations like the ‘Nika’ animal protection association in the Saldus and Kuldīga regions also assist with minor injuries or displaced wildlife, such as deer that wander into urban gardens.
