Latvian election debate: Candidate struggles with Crimea question

During a pre-election debate for the Zemgale electoral district held on September 3, journalist Guntis Bojārs drew significant social media attention after questioning Violeta Drozdoviča, a candidate for the 'Stabilitātei!' party.

Bojārs utilized a proposal from the party's program regarding mandatory 'yes' or 'no' voting to pose a direct question: 'Crimea is Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia. Yes or no?' Drozdoviča, a bookkeeper's assistant with no prior experience as a deputy, appeared unable to provide a definitive answer, visibly hesitating and moving her 'yes' and 'no' cards without selecting one.

The moment has since gone viral on social media, with commentators criticizing the candidate's perceived instability and the party's stance. The debates are part of the 'Izvēlies Latvijas nākotni!' cycle hosted by Latvian Television ahead of the upcoming 15th Saeima elections.
