Latvian healthcare workers protest for wage increases

Healthcare workers in Latvia are holding a protest in Riga to demand significant wage increases and better funding for the healthcare sector. Organized by the Latvian Health and Social Care Workers' Union (LVSADA), approximately 1,000 participants are expected to gather in front of the government building.

While LVSADA initially sought a 30% wage increase, a compromise figure of 25.4% has been discussed, which would require an estimated 228.7 million euros. The Latvian Association of Family Physicians (LĢĀA) is also participating, supporting the demand for a 30% increase in the next state budget and calling for the resignation of Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri.

Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri stated that while a wage increase is necessary, achieving a 30% hike is uncertain due to slow economic growth and the prioritization of national security in the budget. He noted that the government's declaration aims for healthcare funding to reach at least 12% of government spending, requiring an additional 400-500 million euros. Protesters argue that current insufficient funding causes the national economy to lose up to 1 billion euros annually due to premature mortality, preventable diseases, and human resource shortages.
