Latvian hockey player Ralfs Freibergs criticizes CAS ruling on Russia
Former Latvian national team defenseman Ralfs Freibergs has expressed shock and disappointment following a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The CAS decision allows Russian teams to participate in all International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) championships starting in 2027.
Freibergs stated that while he personally would refuse to play if Russia returns to international competition, he warned that Latvia cannot afford to boycott championships alone. He noted that a solo boycott could force the Latvian national team to restart from the lowest division, potentially damaging the country's hockey future.
Freibergs questioned whether the IIHF properly assessed the legal risks associated with this litigation and criticized the organization for its apparent lack of preparedness. He suggested that the issue of Russian participation should now be addressed by diplomats, ministers, and heads of state rather than just sports federations.
