Latvian Insurance Bureau reports age trends in uninsured vehicle accidents

Statistics from the Latvian Insurance Bureau (LTAB) covering the period from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, indicate that drivers aged 18 to 29 are most frequently responsible for traffic accidents involving vehicles without mandatory third-party liability insurance (OCTA). This age group accounted for 27.22% of such accidents, while drivers aged 50 to 59 were responsible for the fewest at 9.44%. Additionally, individuals under the age of 18 caused 2.22% of these incidents.

The overall proportion of traffic accidents caused by uninsured vehicles is decreasing, falling to 0.54% of all reported accidents in the last 12 months, compared to 1.16% in 2022.

LTAB Chairman Jānis Abāšins warned that while the Guarantee Fund covers damages to victims in accidents involving uninsured vehicles, the costs will be recovered from the uninsured driver or owner. These damages can reach tens or even hundreds of thousands of euros. The bureau also noted that some drivers involved in these accidents are repeat offenders who also lack valid technical inspections or drive under the influence of prohibited substances.
