Latvian Motor Insurers' Bureau warns of OCTA insurance delays

The Latvian Motor Insurers' Bureau (LTAB) has issued a warning to drivers regarding mandatory third-party liability insurance (OCTA). The bureau reports an increase in complaints from drivers who received fines despite having already paid for their insurance policies.

LTAB clarifies that a bank notification confirming a successful payment does not mean the insurance policy is immediately active. There is often a processing period during which the insurer must verify the payment, upload the data to the OCTA information system, and confirm the contract. While this usually takes only a few minutes, delays can occur.

Under Latvian traffic law, drivers are required to verify that their insurance is active before operating a vehicle. Driving without valid OCTA can result in fines ranging from 350 to 650 euros. Furthermore, if an accident occurs before the policy becomes effective, the OCTA Guarantee Fund may cover initial damages, but the insurer may later seek reimbursement from the uninsured owner, holder, or driver.
