Latvian official sentenced for firearm storage violations

A court has sentenced an employee of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) to two years in prison and 220 hours of community service. The sentencing follows a tragic incident in Pļavnieki where the defendant's son accidentally shot a classmate and then himself with the father's firearm, resulting in the deaths of both children.

The prosecution stated that while the defendant held permits for certain firearms and ammunition, he violated safety regulations by leaving safe keys in an unsecure location within the apartment. This allowed minors to access the weapon and ammunition. Additionally, investigators found two cartridges intended for other firearms that were being stored without the necessary permits.
