Latvian PM urges EU solidarity for Ukraine via beer metaphor
Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has called for increased European solidarity with Ukraine, using a metaphor that the financial cost of support is equivalent to ‘one beer less per year’ for every European citizen. He emphasized that while the cost is a minor financial burden for Europeans, it represents a matter of life and death for Ukrainians.
In addition to financial appeals, the Baltic nations—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—are pushing for stricter measures against Russia. They have proposed restricting the transit of Russian grain through European territories to prevent the funding of the Russian war machine. The Baltic states have already taken steps to block such transit through their own ports and have formally requested that the European Commission and the European Council extend these restrictions to the entire European Union.
Latvia continues to provide direct humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, including medical equipment, ambulances, and the procurement of 12 diesel generators using remaining government funds.
