Latvian police close investigation into fatal Krustkalni fire

The Latvian State Police have terminated the criminal investigation into a tragic fire in the village of Krustkalni, located in the Ķekava municipality, which resulted in the deaths of two children. The police stated that after a thorough investigation involving more than 25 interviewed individuals and various technical and chemical expertises, they determined that no criminal offense had occurred.

The victim's family and their lawyer, Karīna Landmesere, intend to appeal the decision. The family has raised concerns regarding the findings of the expertise, which suggested the cause was likely an ‘abnormal operating mode in electrical equipment.’ Landmesere noted that the investigation failed to identify the specific appliance involved—such as a kettle, oven, or iron—and questioned the use of non-legal terminology in the decision. The family is currently seeking to review the case materials.
