Latvian police warn of scams targeting families of missing persons in Nepal

The Latvian State Police have issued a warning regarding fraudsters targeting the relatives of Latvian citizens reported missing in Nepal. Following a glacier collapse on August 26 that caused widespread destruction, scammers have been approaching families, promising assistance in locating missing persons and offering services from clairvoyants in exchange for money.

Authorities emphasize that all practical assistance and communication provided by state and municipal authorities is direct and free of charge. Relatives are urged to rely solely on official announcements from the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to obtain reliable information. The disaster in Nepal has left at least 900 people dead and approximately 4,200 missing, with 33 Latvian residents currently considered missing.
