Latvian politicians debate economic gap with Estonia
Latvian politician Ainārs Šlesers, leader of the 'Latvia First' party, has sparked debate regarding the economic gap between Latvia and Estonia. Šlesers claims that if Latvia collected revenue per capita at the same rate as Estonia, its budget would reach approximately 24 billion euros, compared to the planned 15.1 billion euros for 2025. This would represent a difference of roughly 9 billion euros.
Fact-checking analysis confirms that while the base budget figures for both nations are accurate—15.1 billion euros for Latvia and 17.7 billion euros for Estonia—the specific 10 billion euro discrepancy cited by Šlesers is based on his per capita projections rather than direct budget comparisons.
In a televised discussion with Arvils Ašeradens, a prime ministerial candidate for 'New Unity', Šlesers argued that Latvia should aim to reach Estonia's economic level within a decade. Ašeradens contested this view, noting that the Latvian economy is currently growing at a faster rate than Estonia's and pointed to Šlesers' long political career and numerous previous party affiliations.
