Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulberg flags possible misuse of deputies' compensation
Prime Minister Andris Kulberg told journalists that there are several examples where Saeima deputies may be manipulating their compensation claims and requesting unjustified payments. He made the comments after a meeting with President Edgar Rinkēvičs, noting that the deputies' salary is already adequate and that deputies elected from regions are required to reside in Riga for four years.
Kulberg highlighted the case of deputy Leila Rasima, who receives €610 a month in rent compensation despite owning an apartment in the capital. Rasima said the flat was purchased by her mother in her name and that she has never lived there or earned income from it. He explained that compensation rules are based on the declared residence of each deputy and that they can receive unified rent and transport expense allowances, including public‑transport costs. President Rinkēvičs described the issue as a procedural matter for the Saeima.
