Latvian regional transport providers announce one-day strike

Regional public passenger transport providers in Latvia, who hold ten-year long-term contracts, have announced a one-day strike scheduled for September 16. The Latvian Passenger Carriers Association (LPPA) stated that the protest aims to address the lack of solutions regarding contract indexation in response to rising costs.

LPPA President Ivo Ošenieks noted that while the exact number of participating carriers is not yet confirmed, most are expected to join. One carrier, AS CATA, which holds a three-year contract, will not participate. The association emphasized that the goal is not to inconvenience passengers, but to ensure the stability and accessibility of regional public transport.

The carriers are calling on the Ministry of Transport to implement legal solutions for contract indexation to reflect changing economic conditions. They argue that years of discussions and proposals have yet to yield results that allow operators to work according to actual service costs.
