Latvian Saeima reviews deputy housing and transport compensation
The Latvian Saeima has begun discussions regarding the reform of the compensation system for deputies' transport and housing expenses. This legislative review follows a public initiative on the Manabalss.lv portal, which gathered over 10,000 signatures calling for the abolition of the current system.
Parliamentary subcommittees have reached a consensus that the existing regulations must change, though opinions differ on the scope and timing of the reform. Some deputies, such as Skaidrīte Ābrama, argue for stricter limits to prevent the use of public funds for luxury housing or private vehicle use. Conversely, others, including Gunārs Kūtris, maintain that the system is necessary to ensure equal opportunities for deputies representing regional areas rather than just the capital, Riga.
The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) has previously noted that the current regulations create risks for the unjustified or dishonest use of public funds. This follows public scrutiny regarding specific compensation claims made by individual members of parliament.
