Latvian scientists demand resignation of LZA President Ivars Kalviņš

Scientists at the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LZA) are calling for the resignation of President Ivars Kalviņš following his support for granting Latvian citizenship to Indian scientist Divya Kananas Vishvanath for special merits.

Academic members have raised serious concerns regarding the authenticity of Vishvanath’s scientific publications and educational credentials. Chemist Kristaps Jaudzems noted discrepancies on Vishvanath’s website, including the presence of 2026-dated information and images on pages purportedly from 2018. Material scientist Andris Šutka stated that he has been unable to locate any of Vishvanath’s scientific publications, arguing that without them, there is no basis for recognizing her as an outstanding scientist.

Physicist Vjačeslavs Kaščejevs remarked that the Academy’s leadership has lost the trust of its colleagues. Critics warn that the scandal could damage the reputation of Latvian science, impact research funding, and hinder innovation. While the Saeima approved Vishvanath’s citizenship based on submitted documentation and recommendations, scientists argue the vetting process was insufficient. Ivars Kalviņš has refused to resign, stating he would only consider stepping down if allegations of deception or fraud were proven.
