Latvian security service investigates BSA Basketball contracts in Russia

The Latvian State Security Service (VDD) is investigating contracts signed by clients of BSA Basketball, an agency founded by Latvian citizen Artūrs Kalnītis, with basketball clubs in Russia. The VDD is evaluating whether these activities conflict with the security interests of Latvia and the transatlantic community following the invasion of Ukraine. The service noted that Kremlin-controlled media often uses athletes playing in Russia to promote war propaganda.

Specific players identified include Neith Mason, who signed with Zenit Saint Petersburg, and Curtis Hollis, who joined Avtodor. While BSA Basketball is officially registered in the United Arab Emirates and reportedly conducts no economic activity in Latvia, Kalnītis remains a co-owner of a Latvian-registered company, SIA BSA Football.

The Latvian Basketball Association (LBS) has expressed regret over these developments, noting that while the association has ceased cooperation with Russian organizations, some international athletes continue to play in Russia. The LBS has formally contacted the Latvian Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to seek clarification on the legal aspects of these contracts within the context of European Union and Latvian sanctions.
