Latvia moves to close Pāternieki border crossing with Belarus

Latvia’s Interior Ministry has submitted a proposal to the cabinet to halt operations at the Pāternieki road border crossing, the only official road checkpoint on the Latvian‑Belarus frontier. The ministry says the measure is needed to protect state sovereignty, public order and to better allocate border‑guard resources amid a persistent illegal‑migration pressure from Belarus.

Technical failures in the crossing’s information system have left several freight trucks stranded, as reported by the State Border Guard. The crossing’s closure would stop both passenger and cargo traffic between the two countries. The government has already extended an intensified border‑security regime along the Belarus border, which in 2024 prevented 12,046 illegal crossing attempts, stopped 5,388 attempts and detained 26 migrants, while allowing 31 migrants to cross on humanitarian grounds.

Analysts warn that the shutdown could harm Latvia’s economy and welfare, as the border serves as a trade and logistics corridor. If approved, residents and freight operators would no longer be able to travel to Belarus via the Pāternieki point.
