Latvia's government debt reaches 11,700 euros per capita
At the end of the second quarter of 2026, Latvia's general government debt stood at 11,700 euros per inhabitant, according to data from the Fiscal Discipline Council (FDP). The debt level represents 48% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), an increase of 0.9 percentage points compared to the second quarter of 2025.
While Latvia remains among the countries with relatively low debt levels and continues to meet the Maastricht criteria of keeping debt below 60% of GDP, projections indicate a steady upward trend. The Ministry of Finance's indicative assessment suggests debt could reach 47.9% of GDP by the end of 2026, rising to 54.1% by 2030.
Accompanying this growth is a projected increase in the interest payment burden. Interest payments are expected to be 1.3% of GDP in 2026, rising to 1.4% in 2027 and 2028, and reaching 1.6% of GDP by 2029 and 2030.
