Latvia's OCTA insurance payouts rise 13.5% to €84.5 million

In the twelve‑month period from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, the Latvian Transport Vehicle Insurers Office (LTAB) reported that compulsory civil liability (OCTA) insurance paid out €84.5 million, a 13.5 % increase over the previous year. The average OCTA claim reached €1,811.

During the same period 39,740 road‑traffic accidents were reported, 10.1 % more than the year before. Most accidents (73.6 %) were recorded through the standardized notification system, while 26.4 % were logged via police protocols. Approximately 93 % of the incidents occurred in Latvia, with the remainder abroad, chiefly in Germany, Lithuania and Estonia. The share of accidents involving uninsured vehicles fell from 0.87 % to 0.54 %.

Payouts were allocated mainly to vehicle damage (74.8 %), personal injury (10.4 %) and state or municipal costs such as medical treatment and benefits (6.4 %). LTAB board chair Jānis Abāšins attributed the rise in average payouts to inflation and higher prices for auto repair, construction, medical and rehabilitation services. OCTA has been in force in Latvia since 1997 to protect third‑party interests in road‑traffic accidents.
