Latvian Prosecutors Launch Investigation into AirBaltic Officials' Actions

The General Prosecutor’s Office of Latvia opened a review on 24 July 2026 to determine whether the actions and decisions of senior officials concerning the state‑owned airline airBaltic comply with legal requirements. The probe was initiated after a submission by Minister Andris Kulbergs and is being conducted by the State Security Protection Department of the Prosecutor’s Office.

This is the second examination of airBaltic by the prosecutor since 2024, when no violations were found regarding a government decision to reduce the carrier’s capital by €571.3 million. airBaltic continues to seek financial stabilization, reviewing its business plan, negotiating with potential investors and planning short‑term financing from bondholders. The airline reported a 2025 turnover of €779.344 million, losses of €44.337 million and passenger traffic of 5.2 million. The Latvian state holds 88.37 % of the shares, with Germany’s Lufthansa owning 10 %.
