Lau Siu Ming, veteran Hong Kong actor and dancer, dies at 94

Lau Siu Ming, a legendary Hong Kong actor and dancer known affectionately as ‘Ming Sir’, has passed away at the age of 94.

A pioneer of the Hong Kong modern dance movement who studied classical ballet in France, Lau transitioned to film in 1979 after being cast by director Tsui Hark in ‘The Butterfly Murders’. He became a highly recognizable character actor, with international audiences particularly noting his role as the Tree Demon in the ‘A Chinese Ghost Story’ trilogy. His extensive filmography includes titles such as ‘Swordsman’, ‘Project A Part II’, and ‘Police Story 2’.

Beyond his screen presence, Lau was a significant figure in the local arts community, serving as a mentor and supporter of various dance and performing arts groups. His contributions were recognized with an Honorary Fellowship from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2007 and an Honor Medal from the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2013.

Lau Siu-pei, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, issued a statement expressing deep condolences to his family and praising his lifelong dedication to the performing arts.
