Lauenburg receives 1.2 million euros for swimming pool renovation
The German federal government has approved 1.2 million euros in funding for the renovation of the outdoor swimming pool in Lauenburg. The funds are provided through the “Sanierung kommunaler Sportstätten” (Renovation of Municipal Sports Facilities) program.
The project focuses on energy-efficient upgrades and improving accessibility. Key repairs include fixing a non-swimmer pool that currently loses approximately 350 cubic meters of treated warm water per season due to cracks, installing a new wastewater system, and adding an elevator to ensure the facility is accessible to people with physical disabilities.
While the city of Lauenburg is a shareholder in the utility company that operates the pool rather than the direct operator, Mayor Thorben Brackmann noted that the funding is essential for the planned reconstruction. The city will be required to cover a significant portion of the costs, as it no longer qualifies for the higher subsidy rates reserved for municipalities in financial distress.
