Laughter therapy may alleviate COPD symptoms

A randomized controlled study presented at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) congress suggests that structured laughter therapy may help alleviate symptoms for individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

After an eight-week period, participants in the study reported fewer breathing difficulties and an improved overall state of health. Researchers suggest that when applied correctly, laughter may function similarly to a breathing exercise, potentially helping to mitigate the challenges of COPD, such as 'air trapping' where air remains trapped in the lungs during exhalation.
