Laundry experts share tips for fabric care and emergency cleaning
Experts provide guidance on optimal laundry practices to preserve clothing longevity and manage emergencies when detergent is unavailable.
According to the Good Housekeeping Institute, seven types of clothing should be washed in cold water to prevent damage: dark or bright colors (to avoid fading), delicate fabrics like lace or silk, activewear (to maintain elasticity), swimwear, knitwear (to prevent shrinking), stained items (to avoid setting stains), and denim.
For situations where laundry detergent is unavailable, experts suggest using household items such as borax, washing soda, or baking soda combined with white vinegar. Borax is effective for blood, sweat, and mold stains, while washing soda is suitable for heavy fabrics like cotton or towels. Baking soda is recommended for deodorizing and mild stains. However, experts warn that these substitutes should never be used on delicate materials like wool or silk, as they can cause permanent damage.
