Laundry tips for maintaining white clothing brightness

Maintaining the brightness of white clothing can be achieved through various household methods and by understanding chemical reactions that cause discoloration. Common hacks include using baking soda to remove odors and residue, white vinegar during the rinse cycle to combat greyish tones, and diluted lemon juice to address yellowing caused by sweat or body oils. Additionally, drying white fabrics in natural sunlight can help enhance brightness.

Special attention should be paid to the phenomenon where white clothes develop pink or reddish stains after using chlorine-based bleach. This is not permanent dye but a chemical reaction between the bleach and UV absorbers found in many sunscreens. To remedy these stains, experts suggest applying liquid laundry detergent or dish soap directly to the affected area to break down the sunscreen oils, or using oxygen-based bleach soaked in warm water. To prevent this, it is recommended to use oxygen-based bleach for garments frequently exposed to sunscreen and to ensure sunscreen is fully absorbed into the skin before dressing.
