Laura Borràs calls for unity in Catalan independence movement
Laura Borràs, former President of the Parliament and former leader of Junts, has called on the Catalan independence movement to move past a decade of stagnation characterized by internal divisions and recriminations. Speaking at the Universitat Catalana d’Estiu, Borràs argued that the movement has spent too much energy blaming those who failed or betrayed the cause, while others have turned defeat into a core identity.
Addressing political discourse, Borràs stated that while the debate on immigration cannot be avoided, it should not dominate the entire political space. She warned against allowing immigration to be used as a scapegoat for all societal issues, asserting that a nation is strengthened by integrating newcomers rather than marginalizing them.
Furthermore, Borràs demanded the implementation of a transfer of immigration competencies previously negotiated with Pedro Sánchez. This initiative was stalled in Congress due to opposition from Podemos, who expressed concerns regarding potential racist implications in the proposed framework. Borràs emphasized that requesting these administrative tools is a matter of politics rather than racism.
