Laura Docherty jailed for attempting to murder toddler with adult medication

Laura Docherty, 35, has been sentenced to a minimum of six years in prison for attempting to murder a toddler by repeatedly administering adult medications. The crimes occurred between April 2021 and February 2023 at various locations, including a flat in Edinburgh and the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People.

Docherty administered Amitriptyline, Propranolol, and Dihydrocodeine to the child, which caused seizures, episodes of reduced consciousness, and life-threatening complications. The victim required resuscitation and was placed on a ventilator. Judge Michael O'Grady KC described the conduct as “utterly reckless and breathtakingly wicked,” noting that the child's survival was due to the skill of medical professionals rather than the actions of the accused.

In addition to the prison sentence, the judge imposed an order for lifelong restriction. He characterized Docherty as manipulative and stated that her actions were committed for “attention and drama.” The judge noted that any future release would be subject to the decision of the Scottish parole board.
