Costa Rica President proposes ending former presidents' luxury pensions

Costa Rican President Laura Fernández has initiated several controversial political moves. She has introduced a bill titled “Zero Tolerance to luxury pensions of former presidents of the Republic,” which seeks to eliminate special pension regimes and require former leaders to contribute to the social security system (CCSS) like ordinary citizens. This proposal applies to past, current, and future presidents, including Fernández herself.

Additionally, Fernández has called for a major restructuring of the Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (IAFA), stating the institution “is good for nothing.” In response, IAFA officials noted they have been working on an organizational transformation since late last year to better address drug consumption challenges in the country.

On the legislative front, the President expressed support for a constitutional reform that would prohibit deputies from holding private jobs while serving in Congress, arguing that public servants should dedicate themselves to their roles full-time.
