Laura Sarabia faces indictment in Colombian polygraph case

The Colombian Prosecutor's Office is moving forward with the indictment of Laura Sarabia, the former Chief of Staff for President Gustavo Petro. The legal proceedings are scheduled for September 14 at the Paloquemao Judicial Services Center in Bogotá.

Sarabia faces potential charges including abuse of public function, embezzlement by use, and aggravated illegal coercion. The investigation stems from events in January 2023 involving Marelbys Meza, a former domestic employee. Following a reported theft of money and documents from Sarabia's residence, Meza was subjected to a polygraph test at facilities linked to the Presidency.

The Prosecutor's Office has officially rejected attempts by Sarabia's defense to utilize restorative justice mechanisms to seek an early exit from the case, citing the nature of the alleged misconduct. Testimony from police officials suggests Sarabia may have directly ordered the polygraph procedure and changes to security protocols during the investigation.
