Laurentian University and NOSM Secure Major Canadian Funding for Research and Indigenous Health

Laurentian University in Sudbury received a total of $1,114,050 in federal grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for five research projects covering minority‑language education, Indigenous reconciliation, family dynamics in sport, scholarly publishing and historical treaty relations. Vice‑President of Research Dr. Tammy Eger said the grants are critical for training students and producing community‑driven knowledge.

The Canadian Medical Association Foundation announced a $250,000 Niigaanegabow Indigenous Leadership Award for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). The award will support two Indigenous medical students each year for five years and includes a $25,000 contribution to enable NOSM Elders and Knowledge Carriers to attend the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada mentorship gathering. Recipients will work with Indigenous artist Elliott Doxtater‑Wynn on a spirit portrait, highlighting the program’s focus on health equity and culturally safe care in northern communities.
