Grammy-winning artist Lauryn Hill has publicly defended her former partner, Rohan Marley, following social media commentary that characterized him as a “tyrant” who “destroyed” her. The discussion began after influencer Mayowa posted a video suggesting that Hill’s music reflected a sense of self-flagellation and sadness caused by the relationship.

Responding via Instagram, Hill rejected the notion that she was “done dirty” during their years together. While acknowledging elements of self-deprecation in her past, she explained that her emotional struggles had “layers,” noting that both she and Marley were navigating their own traumatic experiences and past hurts while attempting to support one another.

Hill emphasized a desire to afford people grace, stating that individuals can struggle with personal battles while still creating art that helps liberate others. She previously noted in a May social media post that despite their history, Marley “never cheated” on her.
