LAUSD faces criticism over modest test score gains and budget crisis

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is facing criticism from parents following the release of 2025-26 state test results. While district officials highlighted modest gains, data from the California Department of Education shows that English language arts proficiency stands at 48.3% and math proficiency at 39.7%.

Parents have expressed concern that the district is overstating progress given that a significant portion of the student body remains below grade-level standards. Critics, including parent Diana Guillen, argued that district negotiations with United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) focus heavily on employee benefits rather than student academic outcomes.

These academic concerns coincide with a looming financial crisis for the district, which is facing a proposed $3.6 billion budget reduction over the next three years. This reduction is estimated to result in approximately 6,000 layoffs.
