LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho Resigns Amid FBI Investigation

Alberto Carvalho stepped down as superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) effective June 21, 2026, citing the need to keep schools focused on students without distraction. His resignation follows a February 25 FBI raid that served search warrants at his San Pedro home, the district headquarters, and a related property in Florida. The federal probe centers on a multimillion‑dollar contract with ed‑tech firm AllHere for an AI chatbot called “Ed,” which collapsed after the company’s bankruptcy and the founder’s fraud indictment. Carvalho denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged.

The LAUSD Board of Education accepted his letter of resignation, praised his tenure, and pledged stability. Acting superintendent Andrés Chait will continue to lead the district, which serves over 500,000 students and is the nation’s second‑largest school system. The district is cooperating with investigators, but details of the investigation remain undisclosed.
