LAUSD unveils new student-created menus for upcoming school year

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has unveiled a diverse new menu for the upcoming school year, featuring dishes developed with input from student chefs. The new offerings include chicken pozole, butter chicken with kachumber salad, lasagna rolls, pork katsu sandwiches, and vegan blueberry muffins.

District officials held a tasting event at West Adams Preparatory High School involving students, parents, and administrators. The menu emphasizes fresh ingredients sourced through the district's Farm to School Farmer’s Harvest program, which utilizes California-grown fruits and vegetables. One notable winning dish, butter chicken with kachumber salad, was led by an amateur student culinary team headed by Daniel Sandoval.

Superintendent Andres Chait noted that the district's collaboration with local growers has significantly improved meal quality compared to previous decades. LAUSD provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner to approximately half a million students every school day.
