Lausitz Festival begins with Hamlet production in Cottbus

The Lausitz Festival has commenced in the German states of Brandenburg and Saxony, running from August 25 to September 13. Under the theme ‘geschöpferisch’ (creative), the festival aims to explore the cultural transformation of the Lusatia region following the phase-out of coal.

A major highlight of the program is a production of William Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet,’ directed by Marcel Kohler. The play is being staged in a hangar at the former military airfield in Cottbus, utilizing the historical site as part of the production. The ensemble includes Corinna Harfouch, Linn Reusse, and Götz Schubert. Due to high demand and sold-out performances, an additional show has been scheduled for August 27.

The festival features various artistic disciplines, including literature, photography, music, and theater, across 22 venues in 14 locations. Other events include a contemporary art exhibition by Brazilian artist Jonathas de Andrade and a new award called the ‘Credo-Preis,’ which will be presented biennially to individuals supporting the social significance of culture.
