Laut Bercerita film trailer released in Jakarta

The trailer for the film ‘Laut Bercerita’, based on the novel by Leila S. Chudori, has been released to the public. Produced by Pal8 Pictures in collaboration with director Yosep Anggi Noen and Chudori, the film depicts the struggles of Biru Laut and the Winatra study group during the late 1990s.

Chudori, who also served as a screenwriter, noted the challenges of adapting the book to an audiovisual medium, specifically the need to negotiate which scenes to include to maintain story cohesion and appropriate runtime. The film strengthens certain narrative elements, such as the arrest of a reader of Pramoedya Ananta Toer, to provide a more complete historical context.

Actor Reza Rahadian, who portrays Biru Laut, shared his approach to the role during a press conference in Jakarta. He described his method as a calculated risk, choosing not to overthink the character to better capture Biru Laut’s quiet nature. Rahadian emphasized that the character communicates more through his eyes and written words rather than through active dialogue.
