Laval experiences nights of urban violence in Saint-Nicolas
The Saint-Nicolas district in Laval, Mayenne, has experienced consecutive nights of intense urban violence. During the night of Friday, September 11, to Saturday, September 12, 2026, between 50 and 80 youths reportedly clashed with law enforcement.
The unrest involved the burning of vehicles and street furniture, the use of mortars, and reported ambushes against police officers using iron bars. Due to the severity of the situation, reinforcements were called in from Le Mans, Angers, and mobile gendarmes.
The violence is linked to a police intervention on September 7, involving a high-speed vehicle pursuit and a subsequent identity check. During that incident, a 44-year-old man was accused of immobilizing an officer using a chokehold. While the individual was sentenced to eight months of suspended prison for violence against police, his family has filed a report with the IGPN alleging police misconduct.
