Lavallette car crash driver to face only careless driving summons

A 93-year-old driver will not face criminal charges following a fatal crash at Meg's Grill in Lavallette, New Jersey. The driver, Jean S. Chomuk, reportedly mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while attempting to park.

The accident occurred on a Saturday morning when the SUV drove through an outdoor dining area and into the building. The crash resulted in the death of 56-year-old Ursula “Sandie” Keating and left seven other people injured.

Lavallette Police Chief Christian LaCicero stated that after consulting with the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, authorities determined the driver was not acting recklessly, which is a requirement for more serious charges such as assault by auto. Chomuk has been issued a summons for careless driving, and a request for a driver re-examination has been submitted to the MVC.
