Lavallette car crash kills one and injures seven

A fatal car accident occurred in Lavallette on a Saturday morning when a 93-year-old driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while attempting to park. The vehicle crashed through the outdoor dining area of Meg's Grill and entered the building, also causing heavy damage to the adjacent Cornerstone Wines & Liquors.

Ursula Keating, 56, the wife of an Ocean County volunteer fire chief, was killed in the incident. Seven other individuals sustained injuries. No charges have been filed following the crash.

The event has prompted discussions regarding elderly driver safety. According to NHTSA data, fatalities among drivers aged 65 and older rose by 6% between 2021 and 2022, with 7,971 deaths reported in that age group in 2022 alone. While the CDC and NHTSA note that age-related changes in vision and reaction time affect individuals differently, the incident highlights the growing demographic of older licensed drivers.
