Lavoslav Ružička: The first Croatian Nobel laureate in chemistry

Lavoslav Ružička, the first Croatian Nobel laureate, was born on September 13, 1887, in Vukovar. After his father's death, his family moved to Osijek, where he completed his primary and secondary education.

Ružička pursued advanced studies in Germany, earning his doctorate in 1910 from the Technical University of Karlsruhe under Hermann Staudinger. He later moved to Switzerland to assist Staudinger in Geneva, eventually becoming a professor at ETH Zurich and also teaching at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands.

Throughout his career, Ružička published nearly 600 scientific papers. His research focused on natural compounds, including the structure of pyrethrins, muskone, and cibetone, which are vital to the fragrance industry. He is most notably recognized for his work on the synthesis and structure of steroids, specifically androsterone and testosterone. For his research on polymethylene and higher terpenes, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939.
