Sergey Lavrov rejects NATO military presence in Afghanistan

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has declared the deployment of NATO military infrastructure in Afghanistan and its neighboring countries to be “absolutely unacceptable.” Speaking at the eighth Moscow Format consultations on Afghanistan, Lavrov warned that such a military presence historically leads to regional destabilization and increased conflict.

Lavrov also offered a positive assessment of the Taliban-led government, stating that the administration has successfully maintained control over the country's territory and is governing “quite successfully.” He noted that Afghan security forces are actively combating terrorist groups, including ISIS, and credited the government with reducing opium production by 90% since 2022.

Despite the political developments, Lavrov highlighted the economic and humanitarian challenges facing the nation. He stated that the Afghan economy continues to develop despite severe Western sanctions and the disconnection from the international financial system. However, he warned of a dire humanitarian situation, noting that millions of Afghans may face food shortages this winter. Russia committed to continuing regular humanitarian aid, with the next shipment expected within one to two months.
