Lavrov threatens EU retaliation over tankers and demands US answers on Ukraine strikes

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has issued warnings of retaliation against the European Union regarding the seizure of Russian energy tankers. Lavrov accused Brussels of “robbery” and “piracy” through its efforts to sanction the so-called “shadow fleet,” a term he claims was invented by the EU to justify actions against vessels bypassing oil and gas export restrictions.

Lavrov stated that President Vladimir Putin has signaled that Russia will respond to these seizures “in kind,” noting that Moscow will select its own targets. He criticized the EU for empowering member states to inspect, stop, and potentially sell seized cargoes, with proceeds potentially being redirected to Ukraine.

In a separate diplomatic development, Lavrov demanded explanations from the United States regarding alleged American involvement in the planning and execution of Ukrainian strikes deep within Russian territory. Moscow has submitted inquiries to Washington seeking clarification on the extent of U.S. participation in these operations.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Lavrov dismissed the possibility of a simple ceasefire, arguing that any cessation of hostilities must lead to a “long-term, reliable, and sustainable settlement.” He also indicated that Russia intends to intensify strikes against infrastructure that supports the Ukrainian military machine with Western assistance.
