Law enforcement actions taken in Argentina femicide case and Mexico gender violence response

Authorities in Argentina have arrested four individuals in connection with the triple femicide of Morena Verdi, Brenda del Castillo, and Lara Gutiérrez in Florencio Varela. While investigators believe none of the new detainees were present during the murders, they are being investigated for roles in a criminal organization, including providing funds, phones, and vehicles, or assisting in the concealment of evidence and suspects.

Among those detained is a 52-year-old man suspected of aiding the perpetrator, David Gustavo Morales Huamán, and a 70-year-old woman accused of acting as a front for him. Other arrests include the wife of an existing suspect and a former partner of another gang member, suspected of facilitating drug transport and housing organization members. Police seized a 9mm pistol, ammunition, and mobile phones during the raids.

In Mexico, the arrest of a suspected serial aggressor of sex workers in Mexico City has prompted calls for strengthened legal mechanisms to combat gender-based violence. The Green Party (Partido Verde) has advocated for the implementation of specialized state prosecutor offices to improve investigations and prevent impunity. This follows federal legislative changes approved in November 2024 designed to mandate that states maintain trained personnel and infrastructure specifically for investigating crimes against women.
