Law enforcement agencies adopt AI for training and reporting

Law enforcement agencies in North America are exploring the integration of artificial intelligence to improve operational efficiency.

The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has become the first Canadian police force to implement AI for hiring and training 911 dispatchers. Utilizing technology from the American firm GovWorx, the department uses AI to conduct aptitude testing for large applicant pools and to create realistic training simulations involving background noises like fire alarms or explosions. Additionally, HRPS employs SARA AI to manage non-emergency calls, allowing human dispatchers to focus on life-threatening emergencies.

In the United States, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) is investigating the use of AI to assist officers and investigators in writing police reports. Following a previous policy that prohibited generative AI for report production, the department issued a request for information to explore programs that could enhance efficiency and reduce time spent on paperwork. The initiative aims to address staffing shortages by allowing officers to spend more time responding to calls in the field. The department noted that any potential implementation would involve community outreach and ensure officers maintain control over report content.
