Law enforcement agencies conduct major illegal gambling crackdowns
Law enforcement agencies in the Philippines and the United Kingdom have conducted significant crackdowns on illegal gambling operations.
In the Philippines, the Philippine National Police (PNP) arrested 9,401 individuals during July. Authorities seized approximately PHP 3.2 million (about $53,000) in betting money along with various gambling equipment. PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. noted that the operations, which spanned Metro Manila, provinces, and remote areas, relied heavily on community intelligence and public tips to locate gambling hubs.
In the United Kingdom, joint operations involving South Yorkshire Police, the Gambling Commission, and Immigration Enforcement targeted illegal betting activities in Sheffield and Doncaster. During raids on August 4 and 5, officers seized over £110,000 in cash, gold bars, coins, and jewelry, as well as sixteen unauthorized betting terminals. The enforcement actions also uncovered related criminal activities, including stolen motorbikes, counterfeit tobacco, and cannabis plants, resulting in several arrests for gambling offenses, immigration violations, and possession of bladed articles.
